eternal sunshine

eternal sunshine

the latest work from charlie kaufman and director Michael Londry was released this weekend. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND tells the story of Joel who has the memory of his relationship with Clemintene erased after discovering that she had the same proceedure done.

I was able to see it on sunday I just can stop thinking about it. It's such an amazing piece about love and the possibility or erasing the memories of an event in your life.

It premiered at number 6 on the top 10 with 8.6 million. While that doesn't look like a big achievement realize that it was only in half the theaters that the number one movie DAWN OF THE DEAD was in (1,353 vs 2,745), and still managed to make more per theater than TAKING LIVES the number 3 movie of the week with an average of $6,334 per theater. (vs $4,218 for 2,705 theaters for TL)

(spoilers if you continue)

It was amazing, and I'm still going through it over and over in my head. Carrey and Winslet were great, in the type of role that makes you forget who they are and fall in love with the characters, kinda like Jennifer Aniston's character in THE GOOD GIRL.

I think that everyone can identify with this movie, having lost someone they loved, and wanting in the moments of pain to remove the hurt. Showing that by removing the hurt, you're also losing the moments of happiness, and the tiniest pieces of pleasure, the ones that you value the most, that they are the ones that you wish you could hold onto is amazing.

When I first heard about this movie, I thought it was an incredbile idea, and when the publicity started rolling, I tried my best not to learn anymore than I should about the story line. The Trailers that they have been playing on TV I don't think are selling the movie properly. I saw Winslet on Letterman, and she gave away that the first time that they meet in the movie is actually the second time they meet, I would have liked to find that out myself. Also I read EW review, and they kind of gave away Woods roll and the different bits about Stan and Mary and Howard, but not enough where I was still able to be surprised and enjoy the twists on their characters.

I downloaded the first draft of the script and I've read bits and pieces about it. Kaufman's original seems to go into a lot more detail about their future from what I've gathered, and I kinda like the way the director left it open at the end. I kind of hope that by knowing about their past and learning from it, (that whole those who forget the past are destined to repeat it) will make them better people and will help create a successful relationship, but thats just the stupid romantic in me wanting the happy ending that life seldom gives.
